Everyone knows the saying “it takes one to know one” but Rick Austinson took it to an entirely new level. If I didn’t know better I would have thought that Author of the Gust was written by a thirteen year old girl. It’s a story that is realistic in feeling every thought every feeling every word to come out of Ryo’s mouth is something an adventurous spunky girl would say in all those situations. I would know I was thirteen when I read it. It’s an incredible book that gives hope to anyone who was lacking it. Now don’t be weird, go out and read that book! – Emily, age 14
Oftentimes, when one hears about a story with a leading heroine, the first thing they think of is, ‘She’s going to find love in the end’. Now, when I picked up this book, I must admit, I had some similar thoughts; having a story written about a girl going on a crazy adventure isn’t something that sets very high expectations in my mind. However, once I picked up the book, and started reading it, I had to keep going until I finished it! This story, centering on a lovable outcast by the name of Ryo Sansen, is much more than it seems to be. The first thing that came to mind when thinking about the story is the rather well-known quote, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ and this story seems to be a perfect incarnation of it. While it may not seem like all that much at first and maybe even a bit intimidating by its size, this story wraps itself around you and sucks you into it, forcing you to feel what Ryo feels, understanding her thoughts and actions in a way that not many stories have done to me before. What is almost astounding is that such a fascinating story about a thirteen year old girl is written by none other than Rick Austinson… a man in his mid-twenties. How someone can write such a story about a teenage girl without being one at some point themselves is beside me, but he has certainly pulled it off! If you haven’t yet, you should most certainly go and buy it- you’ll thank me later. - Sarah, age 14
I read Rick's book, Author of the Gust, and it reminded me of no other book I've ever read. It was totally awesome in a totally Rick Austinson way and that's about as original as it gets. I don't really know much about writing but I do know Rick. As far as I can tell, this story is gold!!! – Tyler - age 14
